"OUT OF THE ASHES" ORGANIZATIONAL TOOL CREATED AND DISTRIBUTED BY CEDAR FIRE VICTIMS - To assist families who lost their homes in the Witch Creek fire, a group of nearly 100 Scripps Ranch volunteers designed, assembled and are distributing 1000 file system totes, customized to the needs of recovering fire victims. Each portable, plastic tote contains pre-labeled hanging files and manila folders to help organize the many important forms, receipts, and documents acquired during the recovery process. Many of this project's volunteers lost their Scripps Ranch homes in the 2003 Cedar Fire and are now eager to "pay it forward" by sharing their post-fire experience and knowledge with those who are beginning the recovery process in Rancho Bernardo, Poway, Ramona and other surrounding areas. They reveal, "Getting organized helps you feel in control of your life again." The totes are currently available (free of charge) at the Rancho Bernardo Assistance Center (18448 West Bernardo Dr., San Diego, CA, 92127). Plans are currently underway to distribute totes at additional Relief Centers. Please feel free to share this information with friends and neighbors affected by the 2007 fires.

Group seeks help for fire recovery center

Ramona Disaster Outreach needs people who are committed to helping people who have suffered loss from the Witch Fire.

Leland Jones, Bonnie Frede, Karen Clendenen, and LaVonna Connelly are long-term members of the Ramona fire relief committee. They need people to help them establish a recovery center in Ramona and are seeking grants for that cause.

They meet weekly at St. Mary’s in the Valley Episcopal Church at the corner of San Vicente Road and 12th Street. All are welcome.

Persons interested in joining the group also may contact them at Ramona Disaster Outreach,

St. Mary’s in the Valley Episcopal Church (www.stmarysinthevalley.org) is actively involved in fire relief. Here's what we're doing and how you can help.To each of the six St. Mary's families who lost their home, we are offering to provide three advocates.  One advocate will focus on spiritual and emotional help.  One will focus on arranging for practical help – like sifting ashes, moving to temporary housing, or finding something they need.  We hope to find these two advocates among our church family.  The third advocate to help with the myriad red tape of insurance and rebuilding will come from the Cedar fire relief organization.  These folks speak from first-hand experience.

For the three St. Mary’s families who had some damage, we will provide similar services using as many advocates as required to meet their needs.  If you know of anyone that needs help, please let us know; send e-mail to needshelp@stmarysinthevalley.org

For any needs we cannot meet from within St. Mary's, we will work with partners outside our church to find a solution. We have ties to the diocese, Episcopal Relief and Development, other local and regional fire relief groups and some foundations.

Virginia Pollack will act as coordinator for all advocates and will channel requests that go outside the church.

How you can help – long  and short term

We hope to find at least 12 long-term advocates within the church.  We already have two volunteers. We will match volunteers to survivors, considering survivor needs and volunteer’s skills and knowledge.  Brief training will be provided.  Advocates should be prepared to serve for a minimum of six months but most likely they will be needed for 1-2 years.

Advocates will call on folks who are not advocates to meet each need.  We need task-based volunteers who can give time for a day or a few hours when needed.  For instance, you might volunteer to clean up debris, help a family move, shop, cook food, share knowledge, donate items or money.  There are 1001 things you could do.  And you can help if you are 10 years old or 99.

The best way to volunteer is to send E-mail to canhelp@stmarysinthevalley.org. Let us know how you would like to help or what you do best.  You should receive a response within 36 hours.  If you do not have access to E-mail, you can call Virginia Pollack at 788-1536 or leave a message with Kelly in the church office so Virginia can return your call.  Office hours are Monday thru Thursday, 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
